Exhibition Hillforts – Silent Witnesses of the Past

On Friday, 9th September 2016 the exhibition Hillforts – Silent Witnesses of the Past was opened at the Park of Military History in Pivka within the framework of X Festival of Military History. The exhibition was organised by the institute Beautiful Karst (Zavod Krasen Kras). The visitors were addressed by the director of the institute and founder of the exhibition, Goran Živec, by State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia Damjana Pečnik, by mayor of Pivka Robert Smrdelj and by Janko Boštjančič, head of the Park.

The goal of the exhibition is to make the wider public aware of the importance and protection of gradišča or hillforts in the classic Karst. The exhibition, called Debela Griža – Pearl of the Komen Karst, was first presented from February to September 2016 in the Štanjel Castle. The renewed and supplemented exhibition Hillforts – Silent Witnesses of the Past takes us through archaeology, ethnology and geology, cultural landscapes, ways of life, water collection, transitional nature of space and traffic connections and the spread of the hillforts in an accessible manner. It was created in an interdisciplinary way and covers an interesting range of material and non-material subjects. The images are presented on panels, enriched with a video portraying Debela Griža, with a model of the hillfort and its components in the characteristic landscape, with added sounds and lighting of the rooms. It also has various interesting minerals, stones and pottery found in Debela Griža on display.
